I began my advertising career in the winter of 2002. Only it was in Bombay and therefore not much of a winter. Over the years, I have worked with several agencies, big and small, traditional and digital, independent and network, those with a cafeteria and without. I’ve crafted campaigns for clients across sectors, be it technology biggies, FMCG giants, national tourism boards, ambitious startups that love to flout the rules and even a pro-kabaddi team.
Twenty years of turning up to face the blank page has taught me to feel at home with words. I can string them together, with imagination and with purpose, so they add up to a riveting brand story. Likewise, I can arrange them with quiet precision, while drawing on the science of persuasion, to build compelling arguments; compelling enough to convert prospects to customers.
Working so closely with words has also helped with the matter of voice. I know how to strike a chord with audiences from all walks of life: from CXOs who talk the language of business transformation to thumb-stopping millennials.
I’m equally at home with long-form, short-form, and just about every form in between. I can write towards making the complex, simple, and I can write towards elevating the ordinary. The idea, at the end of the day, is to make the consumer see, to make her feel. And, if everything falls into place, to make her act.
I now live in Gurgaon where the winters tend to be harsh. I still write ads for a living. A lot has changed over the years, in the way we think about advertising, in the way we approach it. What hasn’t changed, of course, is how it all begins. Facing up to a blank page.
